Networking Event Tips for Introverted Newbies

Networking events can be pretty nerve-racking to individuals who aren't that familiar  with them. If you aren't prepared, you could be in for an awkward couple of hours.

Here a few tips that will help you be as successful as possible when you go to a networking event.

Have a Purpose

It's a pretty bad idea to go to a networking even and not have a clear reason as to why you're there.

To avoid standing around awkwardly and not having much to say, make sure you know why you are going to the networking event.

What's your project? What are your goals? How do you plan on reaching your goals? Make sure you understand what exactly you're doing so the people at the event will be interested in talking to you further in the future.

I've come across plenty of newbies who decide to go to a networking event and don't have a clue what their goals are.

This can be a great strategy for extroverted individuals who easily engage in conversation but as an introvert myself, I need a good reason to have a conversation with someone so I don't appear awkward.

Research Who Will be at the Event

This is probably common sense. Do your research to determine if the networking event will be worth your time.

I don't suggest going to an event related to technology if you're niche is in the beauty or fitness industry.

Prior research is also helpful so you can establish what you plan to and will likely accomplish by the end the event.

Provide and Receive Business Cards

It's always good to carry at least 10 of business cards along with you when you go to a networking event.

This not only makes you look good, but it's a way for others to contact you in the future. If you're a college student, many universities provide a service for you to print out your own business cards.

Most people you'll be speaking with at the networking events will have their own business cards also.

If you speak with an interesting individual and they don't provide you with their business card by the end  of your conversation, be sure to ask for it.

Engage in Conversation, but Mostly Listen

Most established individuals love nothing more than to talk about their work. Let them just spill all that knowledge to you.

It's important to speak, but speak in a way that pushes the person you're talking to so they feel like they aren't being long-winded.

This is a great way to build a relationship because people love to talk about themselves.

Let them talk about their struggles and how they managed to make their business successful.

Ask them how they funded their business and about useful resources they used. Ask for advice for business-related to issues you're currently facing.

Only time  you should be talking about yourself is during your introduction and when you are later asked.

Find Another Newbie and Make Them Your Friend

This can definitely make things feel less awkward. Talking to someone just as inexperienced as you makes the event feel a little less intimidating considering you'll realize you aren't the only confused and unsure person at the event.

Plus, if your goals are similar, you can meet established entrepreneurs together.

Dress Comfortably

Ladies, remember to value comfort over fashion at these events. If you aren't great at walking in heels, don't wear them!

It's better to wear a comfortable outfit that will allow you to focus than a cute one that'll make you feel more uncomfortable.

I prefer to wear pants with a cute blouse along with flats. As long as you look professional, you're good.

If you feel perfectly comfortable wearing that nice pair of heels, more power to you.

Follow-up!

Keeping in touch is the main point of the networking event right? By the next few days after the event, you need to send a follow-up email to everyone you want to connect with in the future.

This is to ensure the person you had your discussion with will actually remember you.
